Where Splitwise is strongest
Splitwise focuses on group expenses: add a bill, choose who paid, divide it, then see who owes whom. It supports equal and unequal splits, balances, and settlements across mobile and web. Its Pro plan adds tools such as receipt scanning and currency conversion. For a trip or a group that only needs to settle costs, that focused workflow is useful.
Where Circlst fits
Circlst has an Expenses list for recording shared spending, plus separate lists for budgets, debts, bills and subscriptions, shopping, tasks, and more. You can invite people to a list with viewer or editor access. This makes sense when a household wants the plan and the spending record together. Circlst is currently an Android app; its web app is not available.
What to check before switching
Circlst Free includes up to 5 active lists, 50 items per list, and 3 members per shared list. Custom expense splits are a Plus or Pro feature. If you rely on Splitwise features such as its dedicated settle-up flow, multi-platform access, or currency conversion, check those needs before moving. Circlst is better viewed as a broader organizer with expense tools, not a feature-for-feature copy of Splitwise.
A simple household setup
- Create a shared Expenses list for rent, utilities, and groceries.
- Use a Budget list to plan monthly amounts.
- Keep a Shopping list for what still needs buying.
- Invite the people who should edit each list; use viewer access for read-only members.
